Last Sunday in Boulder we had a chance to hang out with the founder and owner of Upslope, which was my favorite Colorado brewery before the weekend, and one of my favorite all around breweries after. We drove up to the taproom to find it was only open Mon-Sat. But before we left the lot, three guys emerged from the building with clipboards so we rolled down the window and asked if they were open. Matt (the owner) said, ‘No.. but we can be. C’mon in, we’re just doin inventory.’
After setting us up with a few pints, Matt started talking about their recent GABF medal winner and the operations side of the brewery. It was easy conversation and clear that Matt and his team were having a lot of fun making (and enjoying) good beer. Later on it came out that Matt is a Miami University alum, which blew everyone at the table away because four of us can say the same. He then went on to tell his story: graduated in an economy not unlike now, headed west on a whim and started out in the kitchen of a local restaurant before logging a few years in project management. All the while a homebrewer, he eventually put together a biz plan and out popped Upslope.
Needless to say it was a cool experience and Matt and company have my vote from here on out. Genuine good guys, good story, GREAT packaging, and oh yeah - really solid beer. Check em out when you get the chance.
